Evangelizing the Numbers

Recently I shared with the parish an astounding statistic regarding St. Margaret of Scotland: in the last fiscal year (July 1, 2016 to June 30, 2017) 77 infants and children were baptized! The last time we came close to that number for baptisms was 1967 – fifty years ago, when the parish was twice the size it is today. We rejoice that so many families are choosing the Catholic faith for their children. This fact also indicates the repopulation trend happening in the neighborhoods that make up St. Margaret. With this good news, however, comes the challenge of meeting the pastoral needs of our growing parish. How is our faith community to keep pace in helping families stay close to the household of God? What should we be focusing on?

School is Open!

In six months, despite unseasonable summer rains and an unexpected brick layers’ strike, St. Margaret’s new middle school building was completed in time for the new school year.  On Monday, August 31 children in our 6th, 7th and 8th grades entered their new classrooms and became the first students to take up their studies in this state-of-the-art facility.  It is an historic moment for Catholic education in the City of St. Louis, as this is the first new free-standing elementary school to open in fifty years.  The project is the fruit of many generous givers – of time, talent and treasure.

On Care for Our Common Home (Laudato Si') is the new appeal from Pope Francis addressed to "every person living on this planet" for an inclusive dialogue about how we are shaping the future of our planet. Pope Francis calls the Church and the world to acknowledge the urgency of our environmental challenges and to join him in embarking on a new path. St. Margaret of Scotland: A Profile of Our Patron

Margaret of Wessex was born while her family was in exile in Hungary, circa 1045 AD.  Her family returned to England in 1057 where her brother was briefly an Anglo-Saxon (uncrowned) king.  Following the Norman conquest of England in 1066, Margaret and her family fled England and King Malcolm III of Scotland welcomed them graciously and took them under his protection.  He soon took Margaret as his wife.  They had six sons and two daughters together.

Determining the Future of Our School

St. Margaret of Scotland School continues to grow but the physical space of our buildings is at a saturation point.  If we are to accommodate this increasing enrollment – which is projected to continue in the next few years – then we must plan for the future.  This October we will proceed with a Feasibility Study to determine if it is possible for the parish to afford physical expansion to the school.  Our “good problem” presents serious challenges.  We will require both a prayerful and pragmatic approach to deciding the direction we will take.
