Throughout the year, we present an article in the bulletin each week on a variety of topics, written by a member of our Parish staff on a rotating basis.

From The Coordinator Of Inclusion, Diversity, & Equity

by Corey Shorter

Let me take this opportunity to introduce myself. My name is Corey Shorter. I am the new Coordinator of Inclusion, Diversity, & Equity for St. Margaret of Scotland School.  I’m honored to be the father of Courtney (13), and the husband of Latricia Shorter.  Our family of three recently became a family of four with our goddaughter, Nakhia (11), coming to stay with us full time as of last November.

I have my bachelor’s degree in business management and my associate’s degree in business administration from Columbia College. While at Columbia College, I was chosen to be a student representative for Fox 2 News and given the chance to represent my college on STL Today.  Also while at Columbia College I entered in the nationwide school business pitch competition and won 2nd place for my Hidden Wealth Mentorship concept.  I have created a career in serving the youth, as well the community, and have been doing so for 5+ years.  I started out as a safety officer for the St. Louis Public Schools.

While working at SLPS, I recognized that something was missing, and that our youth was suffering as a result. The first thing I realized is that there was a shortage of active fathers in the community.  This prompted me to start “The Hidden Wealth Mentorship” program.  With this mentorship program, our focus was to service children ages 8-18.  I felt obligated to become a father figure to the children I mentored, especially the children who didn’t have an active male role model in their lives.  When I was a sophomore in high school my father became ill and passed away shortly after.  I remember having to process all of these different feelings and not having anyone to coach me through it.  God showed me how to take my pain and transform it in order to help someone else grow. I  truly believe that what we go through is not only for us, but to share and to help someone else get through.  One of our core values was to build family and with my mentorship we did just that!

I’m motivated by the mission to help the youth, as well as adults, find their fulfillment and to help discover their purpose in life.  As the Diversity Coordinator at St. Margaret of Scotland School, my mission is “to build and leverage a diverse and inclusive environment committed to ensure the success for all students and staff.”
