Trashing Pumpkins

Have you (and your children) come down from the Sugar Rush yet of Halloween?  Have you prayed to all the Saints and Souls for the best way to systematically help guide children in self-mastery and good choices with one piece of candy a day?  Or… has it accidentally and secretly made its way into the trash can?  Ok… Who would do that?!  Not me…

But the real question is… Where’s the Pumpkin that you carved as your bright-eyed children anticipated the Glow of the Season?  Before you TRASH it… WAIT… Check out what Ms. Stacy and the PreSchoolers have been up to!!

They are learning about the life cycle of a Pumpkin as they accompany Will Hubbell’s character Tim, in his children’s book entitled, “Pumpkin Jack”.   As Pumpkin Jack begins to rot and grow mold, Tim’s mom tells Tim to trash it.  In his reluctance to dismiss and discard Jack, Tim places Jack in the garden outside – returning Jack to the earth from whence he came (hmmm… is this sounding theological?).  And magically – or according to plan – time and nature begin to work their wonders.  As Jack decays and as the seasons change, eternal Spring brings a new green sprout!  New Life!!  Vines ensue with bright yellow flowers and eventually fresh, new round pumpkins!!  Check out our SMOS preschoolers as they witness and grow through the end, the middle, and the beginning of new life… all through the eyes of a pumpkin.

Throughout the school year, we will be highlighting the amazing and wonderful things that are happening in our classrooms and grade levels at St. Margaret of Scotland School. We are very proud of the work our teachers do with our students and are amazed by what happens at SMOS. Our goal is to share more about the hidden gem that is St. Margaret’s.
