Celebrate the Life and Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Martin Luther King Day is Monday, January 19, and students will have the day off from school. The SMOS DEI Committee invites all St. Margaret’s families to take part in several events planned throughout the holiday weekend, January 16–19, to honor Dr. King’s enduring impact and message of equality, justice, and community.
SMOS Night at the Museum
Friday, January 16 | 5–8 PM
Missouri History Museum, 5700 Lindell Blvd, St. Louis, MO 63112
Join us for a special evening at the Missouri History Museum as part of its monthly nighttime series. This is a wonderful opportunity for SMOS families to gather, explore, and celebrate together. All current exhibits will be open, including Mill Creek: Black Metropolis, which explores the vibrant history of this once-thriving Black neighborhood and its lasting significance in St. Louis history.
Featured Program: Let It Resound – The Legacy of Black Composers
Experience an inspiring concert led by St. Louis Symphony Orchestra IN UNISON Chorus Director Kevin McBeth and the Young Artists, honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. through the works of composer Florence Price. The performance will highlight themes of unity, resilience, and social justice, featuring musicians from the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra.
This evening promises to be a meaningful celebration of music, history, and community—connecting the past and present through the power of art and storytelling.
And stay tuned for further details about the DEI Committee’s other plans for the holiday. There will be a presentation by a colleague of Dr. Martin Luther King, who will speak briefly to the students during announcements and read a section of the ‘Letter from Birmingham Jail’ to them. Also, there will be a service opportunity for SMOS families to participate in as well, which is a great way to engage with the SMOS community while honoring the legacy of Dr. King. More info coming soon!

In the absence of a dedicated Coordinator of Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion after the passing of Mr. Shorter, several school parents from the PTA DEI Committee have stepped forward this year to make sure that diversity efforts are still being addressed at the school. Parents Charley Knuckles Harper and Heidi Klosterman are currently running Diversity Council, ABAR, and No Place For Hate along with members of the school staff, and several other parents have been integral in planning and organizing the curriculum and activities for this year as well. We appreciate their dedication and commitment to keeping DEI at St. Margaret’s an important and unique priority.
