Meet Mary Kay McVey
Hello! My name is Mary Kay McVey, and I am the new Coordinator of Religious Education at St. Margaret of Scotland. You may already know me as a fellow parishioner, a member of the choir, or a member of the Living Justice Ministry at St. Margaret’s. St. Margaret’s has been my spiritual home since 2005, even though I left to work in Chicago and then in Tulsa, Oklahoma, over the last seven years. But home has always been St. Louis and St. Margaret’s.
I thought I was going to retire, but God seems to have other plans for me. When the position of Coordinator of Religious Education opened, it seemed a perfect way for me to use my experience and theological education from Aquinas Institute of Theology, serving in the religious formation of children and adults right here in my home parish. I feel so honored and blessed to be able to be a member of the parish staff and the school community. I ask your prayers and support as we all continue to walk this journey of faith together.
Our new school year has begun with plenty of opportunities for prayer and reflection by our faculty and students. The faculty and staff took time to meet, celebrating Mass together, followed by a morning retreat before the school year began. It was a wonderful way for our returning teachers and staff to reconnect. And for those of us who are new, to get to know each other before the children arrived.
On the feast of the Assumption, we celebrated our first all-school Mass. The eighth grade took the lead for our school Mass this week on Wednesday. We will be meeting our seventh-grade parents on Tuesday, September 9th to begin preparations for the sacrament of Confirmation. Our second-grade will be celebrating two sacraments this year, First Reconciliation and First Communion. We will be meeting with second-grade parents on October 21st to prepare for First Reconciliation.
Next week is our first school assembly with prayer led by the Eighth Grade, featuring a play about St. Margaret of Scotland. I look forward to keeping you updated about upcoming projects, sacramental celebrations, and prayer opportunities in our students’ lives.
