Oh, The Drama!
“Do you like my haircut?!”
“Yeah, it’s great.… pause … Like … what you did right there? (vaguely points to the left side of his face) Yeah, it’s really cool.”
Hmmm. Is she lying? Is she being real? Or is she ACTING?
I watched this improv take place this morning between two students in Mr. Sonntag’s Drama Class, where SMOS Middle School students are exploring the idea that “Acting is the art of creating life in imaginary circumstances.” How does one begin THAT process? Wouldn’t you have to start somewhere – well, REAL first?
And that’s what they did. Acting is really the study of human behavior … learning about what is real about yourself and then using it. Hence, the first activity in Drama class supports just this. Each student began by telling the class one secret and one lie about themselves. The foundation of this vulnerability is the core that connects what is real with what is imagined. From this, these drama elective students will learn how to use their voices, facial expressions, and body language to bring characters and stories to life! They’ll get to step into different roles and new experiences through fun exercises, improvisation, and short scenes. They’ll get to practice creativity, confidence, and teamwork as they learn to perform in front of others.
Anyone want to join me for an Acting Class?!
Or are we already acting?
Hmmmm.
Throughout the school year, we will be highlighting the amazing and wonderful things that are happening in our classrooms and grade levels at St. Margaret of Scotland School. We are very proud of the work our teachers do with our students and are amazed by what happens at SMOS. Our goal is to share more about the hidden gem that is St. Margaret’s.
