Sponsored by the SMOS PTA & Gun Sense: For the Common Good
The week of August 25-29, 2025, St. Margaret of Scotland will be participating in the second-annual SMART Week – to spread the word on the critical importance of secure gun storage to prevent gun violence.
Last year, St. Margaret of Scotland School began a partnership with Be SMART For Kids, becoming the first “Be SMART School” in the St. Louis area. Be SMART is specifically a program that advocates for common-sense gun safety for families. Part of the program at SMOS includes the opportunity for parents to sign a pledge to “Be SMART” when it comes to handling gun safety and talking to friends and family when their kids go to play at someone’s house.
The Be SAFE gun safety for kids program is being newly developed by St. Margaret of Scotland in an effort to keep our students safe should they ever come across an unsecured weapon. The S-A-F-E in Be SAFE stands for Stop (everything that you’re doing and think), Avoid (touching the weapon), Flee (the area – get away from the weapon), and Enlist (the help of a grownup). St. Margaret of Scotland Parish’s robust Gun Sense ministry will be collaborating in these efforts, and we will have some activities next week related to gun safety, including:
- Be SAFE Assembly on Wednesday, August 27, at 9:30am with the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department and the SMOS Student Council in the Gym (K-5).
- In-class SMART Week Programming for Middle School (6-8) students presented by the Gun Sense Committee – various times starting at 8:00am on Thursday, August 28.
- Be SMART Presentation for parents at 7:00pm on Thursday, August 28 in the School Cafeteria. All parents (grandparents, caregivers, etc.) are welcome and encouraged to attend.
- SMART Week Prayer Service on Friday, August 29th, at 2:00pm in the gym to pray for an end to gun violence (2-8).
- Wear Orange Dress-Down Day on Friday, August 29th – students may wear anything orange (shirts and accessories, including hats, tutus, scarves, etc.).
