The month of May is arguably the most delightful month of the year – the weather is great, trees are budding and flowers are blooming, the school year is ending, summertime awaits! But it is also one of the busiest months of the year, its days filled with sacraments, end-of-the-school-year events, graduations, Mother’s Day, Memorial Day, and family celebrations!
During this month, Catholics traditionally honor Mary, the one who brought Jesus to life. This last Wednesday, we held our traditional May Crowning at the School Mass. As we honor our heavenly mother, we also honor and remember our own mothers on Mother’s Day next weekend. During May and into June, we will be having a Mother’s Day Spiritual Bouquet, with Masses offered for the living and deceased mothers of St. Margaret. Mother’s Day cards and envelopes are still available at the doors of Church. You may give the card to your mother and return the envelope with a donation for the Masses.
This month is usually packed with wonderful feasts! As the 50 days of the Easter season draw to a close, we anticipate the Feast of the Lord’s Ascension on May 12 and the great Feast of Pentecost, the birthday of the Church, on May 19 (remember to wear red this weekend!). Memorial Day weekend brings the Feast of the Most Holy Trinity this year. This month, we also celebrate the feasts of St. Joseph the Worker, Saints Philip & James, Our Lady of Fatima, St. Matthias, St. Pope Paul VI, the Visitation of Mary to Elizabeth, and the new feast of Mary, Mother of the Church, celebrated the day after Pentecost.
We rejoiced with our First Communion class last Sunday, and we rejoice with our Confirmation class, who received the Sacrament from Archbishop Rozanski this past Thursday. In the weeks to come, several couples will be married at St. Margaret of Scotland, and on May 25, three new priests will be ordained at the Cathedral Basilica for service in the Archdiocese of St. Louis. We pray for and congratulate all those celebrating Sacraments!
Also on May 25, we will graduate our 8th Grade class from St. Margaret of Scotland School at the 4:30pm Saturday Mass. Congratulations to our graduates and their parents for a job well done. Congratulations to all our graduates from grade school, high school, college, or graduate school! May God be with you and guide you as you continue the journey of life and your journey of faith!
Our Holy Father’s intention for the month of May is for the formation of religious and seminarians. We pray that religious women and men, and seminarians, grow in their own vocations through their human, pastoral, spiritual, and community formation, leading them to be credible witnesses to the Gospel. We pray to the Lord!
