Kindergarten Is A Hoot!

Regurgitation.  Nocturnal.  Parliament.

Any Idea what these three words have in common?

Mrs. Harvatin’s Kindergarten class can tell you!  And even show you!

This week, they had the thrill of putting on rubber gloves… there is always important work accomplished when you do that…and dissecting Owl Pellets!  Seriously!  They couldn’t get enough of it, and neither could I.

Did you know that Owls swallow their prey whole and regurgitate all bones and fur that do not get digested into a black ball called an Owl Pellet? These students identified such surprises as shrew shoulder blades, mole vertebrae, mouse skulls, bird hip bones and more!  Some of the skulls even had tiny teeth in them.  Students tracked their newfound fun knowledge in their owl books.   Whoo knew?!

So if a group of owls is called a Parliament,  what might a group of Kindergarteners studying owl pellets be called? Hmmmm…

Throughout the school year, we will be highlighting the amazing and wonderful things that are happening in our classrooms and grade levels at St. Margaret of Scotland School. We are very proud of the work our teachers do with our students and are amazed by what happens at SMOS. Our goal is to share more about the hidden gem that is St. Margaret’s.
