Diversity Council Update 10-09-25

In the absence of a dedicated Coordinator of Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion after the passing of Mr. Shorter, several school parents from the PTA DEI Committee have stepped forward this year to make sure that diversity efforts are still being addressed at the school.  Parents Charley Knuckles Harper and Heidi Klosterman are currently running Diversity Council, ABAR, and No Place For Hate along with members of the school staff, and several other parents have been integral in planning and organizing the curriculum and activities for this year as well.   We appreciate their dedication and commitment to keeping DEI at St. Margaret’s an important and unique priority.

This month has been bustling with activity for our students! We kicked off Hispanic Heritage Month with presentations from the Diversity Council about various Latin American countries, where everyone enjoyed tasting Mexican pastries and sipping horchata. Today, our pre-K students engaged with a story featuring the “paletero man” and celebrated with popsicles before dismissal.

A special thanks to Jenny Hill for introducing our students to the traditions and significance of Rosh Hashanah. During lunch, the children celebrated the Jewish New Year with honey sticks and apples, cheering as Hugo blew the shofar.

Looking ahead, we have more events and projects on the horizon, and we would love your assistance. We will be setting up the ofrenda for Dia de los Muertos at the end of this month.  If you’re interested in helping with this, participating in future projects, or receiving updates about meeting times, please email us at dei@stmargaretstl.org.

Your support is greatly appreciated, and we look forward to collaborating with everyone in the near future.
